"Dreamgirls" is a dream come true!!!! I must say, I am a movie afficionado and I do believe I have a very keen taste for whether a movie is good, bad or just damn terrific and I must say, my hour long trek to see the film last night could have been two and I still wouldn't have had a grumble to give. The movie was just fabulous!!
Let me pause because I do have one gripe. I'm in South Carolina right now and Columbia, South Carolina, the state capital, is closest to where my parents live. At least with regards to being able to see a major film in a theater that is decent enough to afford the comforts of stadium seating, complete with plush seating and a gorgeous panoramic screen. Well, guess what? The cotton-picking idiots in that town didn't have a viewing of "Dreamgirls" anywhere in a city with 10 or 15 theaters!! I was livid! I had a mind to call each and every one of those theaters to complain, but I had to pump the breaks. I don't live here and if the proverbial sheep in that city didn't think to do a little rabble-rousing, one of my all-time favorite pasttimes, who am I to hop my "city-slicker" ass on the phone to do so? I may still contact the S.C. Film Commission to see if I can get some answers, but I'm not even sure about that. There's definitely something amiss though.
Anyway, so I traveled to Augusta, GA with my lawyer friend and another friend acquaintance of mine from high school (which could turn into another several paragraphs long post, but I don't even have the energy right this second, later) to see the movie. My keen sense of foresight (smell the sarcasm?) prompted me to purchase the tickets online beforehand so that we would be guaranteed tickets upon arrival. Smart move. Before we even left at 9pm, the 10:40pm show was sold out! So we get there and some idiots are standing in front of me at the kiosk fiddling around like they had all night and I knew, we only had a window of about three minutes before the good seats would have been taken. I hate sitting up in the rafters at some theater and I definitely didn't want to do so for such a well-reviewed movie. What is it with people anyway? I mean, maybe their purpose was really to engage in a little heavy-petting in the dark recesses of the theather, rather than actually watching the film. Well, I didn't come in there to be felt up, so I needed them to move and I needed
them to move fast! So, after I started mumbling expletives a little too loudly, stuff like, "I wish these bastards would hurry up," and "these damn idiots up here are taking too long," oh and, "I can't stand a dumb bastard at a ticket kiosk," I think they got the picture and moved it along. So, we finally got the tickets and I was glad to be on my way. I was in such a great Christmas mood....
We nestled in to three seats in the perfect position and I got ready for the ride. It was a nonstop thrill fest, filled with great songs, memorable lines and superb acting. There were a couple of times when I wished I had a remote for a couple of those songs, but it wasn't unbearable. Now, the movie "Evita" starring Madonna...whew! I thought I would drown myself in my soda. There was too much singing! I understand the whole musical concept. I love musicals, but I think that sometimes, those directors put the songs in at the wrong time when they adapt those musicals into films. That's just my two cents though. Spice loves "Evita" and I'm sure many other people do too.
One small gripe about my viewing experience. There was some queen in the making sitting just below us who obviously had seen the movie two or three times already that day, constantly singing the songs just loudly enough that those around him could hear, and clapping even when nobody else was. He was sooo annoying! At one point, I said, "Shut up," in my most bitchy voice ever. Everyone chuckled. Serves him right. He didn't turn around to see who said it either. He better not had because I had two words jangling around my subconscious...DEAD MEAT!
Back to the movie. JENNIFER HUDSON ROCKS!!! She truly outdid herself. She was powerful, she was solid, she was pretty, she was believable. Beyonce did a good enough job, but Jennifer really stole the show. Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy did very well too and there was another cutie in the film that I'd never seen before and he did a great job as well. The other chick, who noboby else is talking about, Anika Noni Simpson or whatever her name is, did a really good job as well. I think she won a Tony Award for some other show she was in previously. It's a shame she isn't getting much respect for this film.... Overall though, it was just a great movie. When Jennifer sang, "And I Am Telling You", I was blown away! I wasn't expecting such a powerful rendition, but she really tore it up!! I'm telling you, if you weren't able to catch the film last night, or earlier if you live in N.Y., definitely do so. Eddie Murphy did all of his own singing in the film, and it was VERY evident. I must have said 10 hail mary's that he wouldn't get a notion to try to come out with a new album.......after that "Party All the Time" disaster back in the late 80's I believe it was, I can't take another round! Please Jesus, don't let him get any ideas. I might cut my ears off and stuff the holes with masking tape if I ever hear that he has a new single out. Just awful!
Anyway, the film had a lot of messages about friendship, love and the grip that fame and power, or the desire for, can have on the human psyche. I was very pleased and I would even see it again, something I rarely do until a film comes to video. We'll see.
Anyway, enough reading! Get on www.fandango.com and find out when it's playing in a theater near you. It is well worth the 2:05 hours. --SUGAR
